Managing Stan - A Buckley School Book by Corey Green

Stefi's Word Games

Hi, I'm Stefi. I'm the class writer, and I'm always scribbling in my notebook, jotting down story ideas or just playing word games.

Read on to find out about them so you can play word games, too.

An anagram is a word made by rearranging the letters in other words. Here are a few of my favorites:
  • Happenstance Heroes: tense hen approaches, chaperone hates pens,
  • Buckley Bucks: be lucky bucks
  • Corey Green: core energy
  • Stan Elrick: talks nicer, nickel rats
An  acronym is a word formed from the first letter in a series of words. Here are some examples:
  • U.S.A. United States of America
  • LASER: did you know that's an acronym? It stands for light application by simulated emission of radiation.
  • RADAR: Many people think this is a word, but it's an acronym: radio detecting and ranging
A palindrome is a word, phrase, or sentence that reads the same backward or forward. Here are some of my favorites:
  • Sit on a potato pan, Otis
  • Put Eliot's toilet up
  • Racecar
  • Evil olive
  • Step on no pets
  • Do geese see God?
A Tom Swiftie is a sentence in which the description of how the speaker says a sentence applies to the meaning of the sentence itself.

Tom Swifties started in a series of books by Victor Appleton, about the adventures of a young inventor, Tom Swift. Tom Swift books used many substitutes for the word "said." Sometimes the adverb describing the speaker's actions combined with the sentence itself to make a joke.

Lots of people like to make up their own Tom Swifties Here are a few examples of Tom Swifties:

"Sorry those darts ended up in your face," Tom said aimlessly. "I love math," Tom added. "Your construction workers need to put their hard hats back on," Tom recapped.
"Let's play charades," Tom said gamely. This clock chimes"I'll check the clock and see if it's time to leave," Tom chimed. "Allison took more than her fair share," Tom agreed.
This squirrel chatters
"That squirrel stole my cookie," Tom chattered.
ugly dog? mutt?
"What an ugly dog," Tom muttered.
"Some day I'll join the army," Tom grunted.
