New Kid Survival GuideKyle's New Kid Survival Guide

Being a new kid can be tough, but it can also be a lot of fun.  You get to meet new friends, new teachers, try new things, learn new things, and get a fresh start.  It also can be a scary -- believe me, I know.

Here’s my New Kid Survival Guide, a list of "do's and don'ts" that I have learned as a new kid.  I hope it helps.

Big smiles win friends! Smile.  It's hard to talk to someone who is staring glumly at the floor.

Those "strangers" are just friends you have yet to meet!

DO be bold and introduce yourself.  A friendly smile and a “Hi” work magic to break the ice when you meet someone new.
DON’T introduce your imaginary friend Gertrude.
DO tell people your name and make a special effort to remember theirs.  Remember a person’s own name is the sweetest word in the world to them.
DON’T tell people that you prefer to be called “Terminator.”
DO take the plunge and just talk to people. Most of the time, saying something is better than saying nothing and appearing unapproachable.
DON’T tell your new pal Mike that the way you remember him is that he has a huge nose.  Especially if he is a big guy -- with a big nose!
DO be friendly.  Be nice to everyone.
DON’T focus on one group of kids and snub everyone else.
DO try to find areas of common interest.  Get to know people and their hobbies.
DON’T laugh when your new classmate tells you about his obsession with, say, aliens.  If I can keep a straight face, so can you!
DO focus on the good things about your new school.
DON’T elaborate about how great your old school was, even if the hallways were paved with gold.
P.S.  If you have a special talent, use it!  For example, music crosses cultures and languages.  You might think twice about inventing a phantom student.  It has been done.  Your teachers might read Corey Green's books, too!
