Check that there's at least one smoke alarm on every level of your house, and one in or near all sleeping areas. Ask a grown-up to help you test that the smoke alarm's batteries are working. Make sure electrical cords are in good condition. This can help prevent fires caused by electrical problems. Don't leave the stove unattended and don't leave things to cook while you're out of the house. Keep the stove clean and uncluttered at all times. Be careful with candles! Don't leave them unattended and make sure your candle holders are sturdy and strong/good fitting enough to hold the candles upright. Make sure your family has a fire escape plan. Keep all exits free of clutter. Keep gasoline, paint, and other flammable liquids away from heat, sparks, and flame. If you have a fireplace, make sure not to let it burn unattended. It's also important to have a sturdy screen in front of it when it's being used. Only put kindling in to keep the fire going, and don't burn wrapping paper and other inappropriate items in your fireplace. Fire needs oxygen as fuel. So if your clothes catch on fire, stop, drop, and roll. You can also smother the flames with a blanket, rug, or towel. Don't play with fire! Not even me, your favorite pyromaniac, does that. |
